CAMP SETUP in 2020 -- awaiting new regulations for 2021:
- Although we are an outdoor camp, we are following the indoor guidelines for grouping.
- On Monday morning, we will help the kids separate into leagues/teams.
- Each league will consist of 4 teams to compete against throughout the week.
- Each camper will be part of a team of ≤9 campers for the week.
- To build camaraderie, team members will pick a team name and color.
- Wearing a team color shirt Tuesday-Friday is highly encouraged!
- To build camaraderie, team members will pick a team name and color.
- Leagues will rotate through different game/activity/challenge stations, throughout each morning and afternoon session.
- Between each station, equipment and hands will be sanitized/washed.
- Equipment will be sanitized using a bleach solution: 1/3 cup of bleach per 3/4 gallon of water (per CDC guidelines).
WHAT TO BRING/WEAR:
- Completed Sandlot Emergency Medical Authorization form (print & bring Monday)
- Completed Sandlot Westerville Release/Waiver form (print & bring Monday)
- Medication (if applicable): in a plastic bag, labeled with camper’s name, instructions for administration, and an emergency phone number
- Wear: socks, sneakers/tennis shoes and comfortable play clothes (hat and/or sunglasses too?)
- Play clothing -- they will get wet and dirty!
- Sneakers/Tennis Shoes only -- appropriate for soggy field conditions (morning dew, residual rain, afternoon water activities, etc).
- NO: boots fashion footwear, crocs, keens, sandals, slides or similar.
- Backpack to keep all of your belongings together:
- LARGE, FULL* water bottle, labeled with the camper's name -- stay hydrated!!!
- *No water fountains!
- SUNSCREEN (please apply before camp and send more for reapplication** during the day)
- **Camp staff can only help spray, but will NOT rub sunscreen on children!
- Beach Towel (to sit on in the grass and dry off with after water play)
- Personal bottle of hand sanitizer (if desired)
- Lunch (we suggest you use an insulated lunch box with an ice pack)
- Rain jacket or poncho for popup showers -- we will play in the rain!!!
- Trash Bag to keep belongings dry in the event of rain!
- Long sleeve shirt, sweatshirt or jacket for chilly mornings
- Mask (if desired to be worn indoors in the event of a weather emergency)
- Please have students leave electronics at home -- Sandlot Westerville and CCCA are not responsible for damaged, lost, or stolen items!
- We understand that some families feel more comfortable with their child having a device for emergencies purposes and are willing to risk damage, lost or stolen devices for their own peace of mind; however, we reserve the right to hold onto electronic devices during camp hours if campers have them out.
- Please understand, if there is a situation where a parent/guardian needs to be contacted, staff should be notified and permission will obviously be granted.
- $3-6 for Kona Ice -- FRIDAYS ONLY (if desired)
- LARGE, FULL* water bottle, labeled with the camper's name -- stay hydrated!!!
WEATHER / ENVIRONMENT:
- Rain/Storms: We will still play outside in the rain, as long as there is no lightning/thunder. We want kids to be kids -- some favorite memories from childhood are playing in the rain! As suggested above, please pack a rain jacket or poncho (store bought or converted trash bag with head/arm holes) and pack a trash bag in their backpack to keep belongings dry in the event of rain. If lightning/thunder occur, we will immediately go to the gym and stay 30 minutes beyond the last strike.
- Sun: We will be playing most activities on an open soccer field, so sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses are highly recommended. We will seek shade between activities while we wash hands and rehydrate.
- Ticks: We are outside all day, so please take a few minutes each night to check your camper(s) for ticks!
KONA ICE:
- Kona Ice will visit camp at the end of lunchtime each Friday.
- This is available to your child(ren) if you’d like to buy one -- prices range from $3-6, based on size and type of cup.
- For those of you only familiar with their pre-COVID practices, Kona Ice no longer gives customers an unflavored ice and allows them to self-serve their preferred flavor(s) -- they now prepare your preferred (single) flavor from inside the truck. We will have staff helping maintain distancing in line, collecting money, etc.
COVID MASKS / PRECAUTIONS -- awaiting new regulations for 2021:
- Campers and Staff are not required to wear masks while outdoors; however, please let us know if you would like your child to wear one.
- In the event that we need to move indoors due to inclement weather, we will do everything we can to keep campers appropriately spaced (+6') throughout in the gym, so masks are not required***
- ***We cap the number for campers per week based on gymnasium's capacity.
- Regardless, please pack a mask in camper's belongings in the event of unforeseen circumstances (ex: tornado warning).
- We ask that during your week(s) of camp, you try and keep them at home each night -- if you take them out and about they could bring new germs into our camp population.
- Additionally, it is recommended that you keep your camper away from people ≥65-years-old and anyone with underlying health concerns, throughout their camp week and for 14-days thereafter.
TYPICAL SCHEDULE -- awaiting new regulations for 2021:
- 8:00-9:00 = early bird drop-off campers only ($25/camper/week)
- 9:00-9:15 = normal drop-off and attendance (hand washing/sanitizer immediately upon arrival)
- 9:15-9:30 = theme of the day and team/league meetings
- 9:30-11:45 = field games/activities (hands and equipment cleaned between each station)
- 11:45-12:40 = wash hands, lunch (please pack a lunch for your camper each day), wash hands, restroom, etc
- 12:40-3:25 = field games/activities (hands and equipment cleaned between each station)
- 3:25-3:45 = wrap-up (reflect on theme of the day), "Camper of the Day" ceremony, and hand washing
- 3:45-4:00 = parent/guardian pick-up
ACTIVITIES:
- Our games/activities level the playing field and prove every camper's value (brains and/or brawn) to their team, such as:
- Galaxy Ball, Capture the Critter, Four Corners, Battle Ball, Cross the River, Royal Rumble, Battle Royale, Ricochet, Blaster Ball, Water War, Extinct, Pirate Ball, Motion Detector, Dodgeball, Cardio Kickball, Rock/Paper/Scissor Football, Space Invaders, Mouse Trap, Silent Seat Ball, Tip, Highlighter Football, a Talent Show, and many more.
- These activities are selected because they are engaging to all ages/abilities and produce opportunities to challenge/grow new skills while showing their strengths!
Field Trips in 2020 -- awaiting new regulations for 2021:
- Recommended best practice = NO field trips, due to confined space on buses.
- We hope the circumstances change and allow us to resume field trips in 2021, but we'll need to wait and see.
- While this was a very difficult decision because the management team at Westerville Jaycee Pool has been amazing to work with, it removes our ability to swim in the afternoons, and takes away the scuba experience as an option.
- The same can be said for the Resolute Athletic Complex -- although it is an excellent facility that is going above and beyond to maintain a safe environment for their patrons, and provides plenty of space for our activities, the bus situation prevents us from going there as well.
- Rest assured, we are determined to make sure that removing field trips does not take away from the integrity of our camp experience and look forward to partnering with these facilities during the hot afternoons again in the future!
DROP-OFF and PICK-UP:
- This procedure is going to feel odd and very impersonal for parents/guardians, but we must follow the curbside service per Health Department guidelines, so Parents/Guardians will NOT get out of their car.
- Please expect Monday to be especially slow moving at pick-up and drop-off -- and please be patient!
- We will tweak this plan if we see opportunities to make it more efficient, while staying within the guidelines, so please stay tuned!
- EARLY DROP-OFF begins at 8:00 AM
- An additional cost of $25 per camper, per week (due at Monday drop-off, check or cash) -- spots are limited and must be reserved ahead.
- NORMAL DROP-OFF begins at 9:00 AM.
- Entering CCCA: see map
- Please enter the CCCA grounds from North St. using the light at the Sunbury Rd./North St./Central College Rd. intersection.
- Again, Parents/Guardians will NOT get out of their car (see drop-off/pick-up map).
- We ask that you make a SIGN with the child(ren)’s last name printed large, to hold up from your driver’s seat.
- Pull forward until a staff member approaches your car to signal that your child(ren) can get out.
- The child(ren) will have their temperature taken using an infrared (touch-less) thermometer.
- Once each child has been cleared (≤99.9℉ and no signs of illness), the staff member will give you a “thumbs-up” signal.
- Monday, campers should give the staff member:
- completed Sandlot Emergency Medical Authorization form
- completed Sandlot Westerville Release/Waiver form
- medication (if applicable): in a plastic bag, labeled with camper’s name and emergency contact info
- Leaving CCCA:
- HEADING NORTH on Sunbury Rd. or CROSSING EAST to Central College Rd. should loop back through the parking lot to use the light at the North St./Sunbury Rd./Central College Rd. intersection.
- HEADING SOUTH on Sunbury Rd. should continue straight on South St., then turn right on Sunbury Rd.
- The child(ren) will be directed to immediately sanitize their hands.
- After sanitizing their hands, campers will find a place to set up shop for the day.
- Each child will need to bring a beach towel, each day.
- Towels will be spread out 6 feet away from non-household members’ towels and will act as their spot to sit for camp meetings, eat lunch, and keep their belongings in one place.
- Towels may also come in handy after water activities -- and to protect your car seats on the ride home.
- In addition to washing hands in between each activity throughout the day, your child(ren) will also be washing their hands as their last step to prepare for pick-up.
- Again, please stay in your car, pull forward, and hold up your sign for a staff member to escort your child(ren) to you, please have your ID ready upon request.
- If it is raining at pick-up time, you will pick-up at the entrance of KIRK HALL (again, see drop-off/pick-up map on our “Location” page).
MISSION: BUILD CHARACTER THROUGH SPORTS AND GAMES!
- Sandlot Camp is designed to promote physical fitness while challenging personal growth in areas of character (sportsmanship, integrity, perseverance, and teamwork).
- Each day we use activities, challenges, and lessons to help teach these values.
- By the end of the week we want each camper to know what it truly means to be a leader, a reliable teammate, how to set goals and how to move forward to achieve their goals.
- We want every camper to realize that they are strong, important, and capable of accomplishing their dreams through hard work and perseverance.
- Every staff member is hand selected and they will put THEIR WHOLE HEART into YOUR kids!
- We LOVE what we do and want EVERYONE to have an enjoyable, positive, life-changing experience!!!
- There is no better joy in sports than just playing for the fun of it...we want to hear laughter and excitement!
- We want kids to know it is okay to make a mistake, even with best efforts, just learn from it and keep going...daily conversations!
- No one at camp is going pro tomorrow, but today we are meant to enjoy, and be thankful for, the abilities and opportunities placed in front of us!
- The lessons learned at Sandlot Camp will stay with these kids for a lifetime!!!
